Une circulaire du Premier ministre institue le 23 mai comme date commémorative de l’esclavage en métropole par les associations regroupant les Français d’outre-mer de l’Hexagone.

L’Etat reconnaît cette date en mémoire notamment de "la marche silencieuse du 23 mai 1998 qui a contribué au débat national aboutissant au vote de la loi reconnaissant l’esclavage comme crime contre l’humanité" a déclaré François Fillon.

La journée nationale de commémoration du 10 mai consacrée à l’histoire de la traite, de l’esclavage et de leurs abolitions est maintenue. Des événements se tiendront au Jardin du Luxembourg à Paris en présence de Nicolas Sarkzoy ce 10 mai.

La circulaire indique également qu’il y aura dorénavant plusieurs dates commémoratives. Le texte cite ainsi la commémoration de l’abolition de l’esclavage à Mayotte le 27 avril, le 22 mai en Martinique, le 27 mai en Guadeloupe, le 10 juin en Guyane et le 20 décembre à la Réunion.
